Shared Living Arrangement (SLA)

Are you looking for a change in your home life? Shared Living is an opportunity to share your home and your life, while enjoying a rewarding relationship.

Looking Upwards can assist you to launch and maintain a Shared Living Arrangement that meets your needs. We have 45 years of experience in supporting individuals with developmental disabilities in residential settings and in all areas of life.

Your role as a shared living provider:
When you open your home to a person with a disability, you are making a commitment to be an advocate, mentor, friend and support provider. You’ll teach new skills, assist the individual with connecting to the community and developing and maintaining relationships. As an active mentor, you’ll encourage the person to make choices and try new experiences.

Your compensation for providing a Shared Living Arrangement: Your total compensation will range from $18,110 to $33,440 per year. The amount is determined based on the tier classification of the needs of the individual you support. Compensation includes:

  • Tax-free stipend
  • Tax-free room & board payment
  • Taxable respite allowance, enabling you to pay someone to provide substitute care

As a person with a disability, you can expect from your shared living provider support with:

  • Daily routines
  • Maintaining optimal health
  • Community inclusion and relationship building
  • Transportation
  • Financial management
  • Crisis management as needed
  • Obtaining prompt medical care
  • Pursuing your goals and choices

Who is eligible:

  • To participate as a person supported, you must first be approved for a Shared Living Arrangement through the State of Rhode Island, Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD).
  • To participate as a provider, you will need to attend training, pass background checks and home safety requirements.
